  1. Por favor contestenme a esta duda: ¿Como es que en el texto se dice " they can also be used to carry ..." si siempre hemos explicado a los estudiantes que la forma "be used to" va seguida de un verbo terminado en "ing"?

      En el texto, used (pronunciado /juːzd/) es verbo y tiene el sentido de usar. Al estar además en voz pasiva se emplea en el participio pasado y toma el verbo auxiliar to be, y de ahí surge la confusión con la expresión be used to, estar acostumbrado a, donde used (pronunciado /juːst/) funciona como adjetivo.

      La expresión empleada en el texto

      they can also be used to carry messages

      puede traducirse por

      también pueden ser utilizados para llevar mensajes.

  2. Condicional tipo 3: if had done, would have done tipo 2: if did, would do por lo tanto, sería If all deaf children had trained dogs,they would have become more integrated at school and in society.la correcta ya que es del tipo 3.

    1. Gracias por tu consulta, anónimo.

      Tu lectura supone tomar trained como participio pasado. Puede serlo, desde luego, y el resto de tu argumentación técnicamente es correcta desde el punto de vista gramatical. Donde resulta problemática es en la semántica. Si interpretamos had trained como el verbo, estamos diciendo que son los propios niños sordos quienes deberían haber adiestrado a los perros para integrarse mejor en la escuela y la sociedad. Es más, sería el hecho de adiestrar a los perros lo que llevaría a esa integración, no el hecho de poseerlos. Como decía antes, si bien gramaticalmente es una construcción posible, lo que significa resulta bastante extraño, por no decir ilógico.

      Si interpretamos trained como adjetivo, adiestrado, todo encaja mejor: de contar con perros adiestrados, los niños sordos se integrarían mejor en la escuela y en la sociedad.

      Me sorprendería mucho que tu respuesta fuese aceptada como buena, aunque técnicamente no sea incorrecta, dado por un lado su significado y por otro el hecho de que existe una solución obvia y bastante menos forzada.
